Frigyes Riesz (22 janvier 1880 [Györ] - 28 février 1956 [Budapest])

Frigyes Riesz est, avec Féjer, l'une des deux principales figures des mathématiques hongroises entre les deux guerres mondiales. Il est né à Györ où son père était médecin. Son frère cadet, Marcel, devint lui aussi un mathématicien de premier plan. Frigyes Riesz étudie aux universités de Zurich, Göttingen avant de préparer à Budapest son doctorat qu'il obtient en 1902.

Après des séjours en France et à Göttingen, il est un temps professeur de lycée à Budapest avec d'obtenir, en 1911, un poste à l'Université de Kolozsvar. Mais en 1920, à la suite du traité de Trianon, la Transylvanie est cédée à la Roumanie, et Kolozsvar devient la ville roumaine de Cluj-Napoca. Une nouvelle université est créée à Szeged, près de la frontière yougoslave. Riesz y est nommé et il y fonde avec Haar l'institut de mathématiques J. Bolyai. Ensemble, ils créent aussi le journal Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum et ils font de Szeged un lieu reconnu de la recherche mathématique. En 1945, Riesz finit par devenir professeur à l'Université de Budapest, ville où il décède dix ans plus tard des suites d'une longue maladie.

Frigyes Riesz est un des fondateurs de l'analyse fonctionnelle. On lui doit notamment la théorie spectrale des opérateurs compacts, le théorème de représentation de Riesz, ou encore le théorème de Riesz-Fischer qui a des applications importantes en mécanique quantique. Il écrit aussi des travaux fondamentaux sur les séries de Fourier, les fonctions monotones et l'intégrale de Lebesgue.
