Produit vectoriel

Soit $\vec u$ et $\vec u$ deux vecteurs de l'espace orienté. On définit leur produit vectoriel $\vec u\wedge \vec v$ par :

  • $\vec u\wedge\vec v=\vec 0$ si $\vec u$ et $\vec v$ sont colinéaires.
  • l'unique vecteur orthogonal à $\vec u$ et $\vec v$, de norme $\|\vec u\|\cdot \|\vec v\|\cdot |\sin\widehat{(\vec u,\vec v)}|$ et tel que la base $(\vec u,\vec v,\vec u\wedge\vec v)$ soit directe sinon.

Si l'espace est muni d'un repère orthonormé direct, et si $\vec u$ et $\vec v$ ont pour coordonnées respectives $$\vec u=\begin{pmatrix}x_1\\y_1\\z_1\end{pmatrix},\ \vec v=\begin{pmatrix}x_2\\y_2\\z_2\end{pmatrix}$$ alors les coordonnées de leur produit vectoriel est $$\vec u\wedge \vec v=\begin{pmatrix} y_1z_2-y_2z_1\\ z_1x_2-z_2x_1\\ x_1y_2-x_2y_1 \end{pmatrix}.$$

Le produit vectoriel vérifie les propriétés suivantes :

  • il est antisymétrique : $\vec v\wedge \vec u=-\vec u\wedge \vec v;$
  • il est bilinéaire : $(\vec u+\vec v)\wedge \vec w=\vec u\wedge \vec w+\vec v\wedge \vec w;$
  • $\vec u\wedge \vec v\perp \vec u$ et $\vec u\wedge \vec v\perp \vec v;$
  • le produit vectoriel de deux vecteurs est nul si et seulement si ces deux vecteurs sont colinéaires.

Signalons aussi quelques identités célèbres vérifiées par le produit vectoriel :

  • la formule du double produit vectoriel, ou formule de Gibbs : $$\vec u\wedge(\vec v\wedge \vec w)=(\vec u\cdot \vec w)\vec v-(\vec u\cdot\vec v)\vec w;$$
  • l'identité de Jacobi : $$\vec u\wedge (\vec v\wedge\vec w)+\vec v\wedge (\vec w\wedge \vec u)+\vec w\wedge(\vec u\wedge \vec v)=\vec 0;$$
  • l'identité de Lagrange : $$(\vec u\cdot \vec v)^2+\|\vec u\wedge \vec v\|^2=\|\vec u\|^2\cdot \|\vec v\|^2.$$
