Entiers de Gauss

On appelle entier de Gauss tout nombre complexe de la forme $a+ib$, où $a$ et $b$ sont des entiers relatifs. L'ensemble des entiers de Gauss, noté $\mathbb Z[i]$, est un anneau que l'on peut munir d'une division euclidienne : si on note $N(a+ib)=a^2+b^2$, alors pour tout couple $(z,z')$ de $(\mathbb Z[i])^2$, il existe un unique couple $(q,r)$ de $(\mathbb Z[i])^2$ tel que : $$z=z'q+r\textrm{ et }N(r)<N(z').$$ Comme dans tous les anneaux euclidiens, on peut définir dans $\mathbb Z[i]$ toutes les notions de l'arithmétique : PGCD, PPCM,...

Proposition :
  • Les éléments inversibles de $\mathbb Z[i]$ sont $1,-1,i,-i.$
  • Les éléments irréductibles de $\mathbb Z[i]$ sont les nombres premiers congrus à $3$ modulo $4$ ainsi que les éléments $a+ib\in\mathbb Z[i]$ tels que $a^2+b^2$ est un nombre premier.
En particulier, l'anneau des entiers de Gauss est très utile pour déterminer les nombres qui sont somme de deux carrés. Par exemple, si $p$ est un nombre premier, $p$ est somme de deux carrés si et seulement si $p$ n'est pas irréductible dans $\mathbb Z[i].$
