Pavel Urysohn (3 février 1898 [Odessa], 17 août 1924 [Batz-sur-Mer])

Pavel Urysohn est un mathématicien russe décédé prématurément d'une noyade. Il est né à Odessa (actuellement en Ukraine) d'une famille plutôt aisée (son père est un financier). Après avoir fréquenté un lycée privé à Moscou, il entre à l'Université de cette même ville en 1915, dans l'intention d'étudier la physique. Cependant, passionné par les cours de Luzin et Egorov, il préfère se consacrer aux mathématiques. Après avoir obtenu ses examens en 1919, il prépare sa thèse sur les équations intégrales, qu'il soutient en 1921. Il devient alors assistant à l'Université de Moscou.

Les mathématiques moscovites connaissent alors, sous l'impulsion de Luzin, un véritable âge d'or. De nombreux jeunes mathématiciens y font leur classe et Urysohn se lie d'amitié avec l'un d'eux, Pavel Aleksandrov. Ensemble, ils se consacrent à la topologie et, en 1922, ils établissent un résultat de métrisabilité d'espace topologique. A l'été 1923, ils se rendent à Göttingen présenter leurs résultats; ils sont les premiers mathématiciens à quitter l'Union Soviétique. Urysohn continue à obtenir de nouveaux résultats en topologie, et établit une théorie de la dimension topologique (en réponse à une question d'Egorov : qu'est-ce-qu'une courbe dans le plan? qu'est-ce qu'une surface dans l'espace?). En 1924, avec Alexandrov, il retourne en Europe de l'ouest, visitant à nouveau Göttingen, puis la Hollande et la France. Malheureusement, au mois d'août 1924, alors qu'il est en Bretagne, il se noie. Alexandrov et Brouwer mettront un point d'honneur à finaliser ses travaux les deux années suivantes.
